ABSTRACT :

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the nation's only ongoing representative sample survey of student achievement in core subject areas. In 2003, NAEP conducted a national mathematics assessment of fourth- and eighth-grade students. State-level results were also collected at the fourth and eighth grades within all 50 states and jurisdictions. Approximate 190,000 fourth-graders and 153,000 eighth-graders assessed in 2003. Questions based on five content strands: number sense, properties, and operations;  measurement; geometry and spatial sense; data analysis, statistics, and probability; and algebra and functions. Students are asked to answer a combination of multiple-choice and constructed-response questions.

Major Findings for the Nation:

  • Average mathematics scores showed continued improvement since 1990 at both grades 4 and 8.
  • There was an overall gain across all mathematics achievement levels since 1990.
  • Most participating states and jurisdictions showed both short- and long-term gains at grades 4 and 8.
